Where it came from
The 2012 Austrian 5 Euro coin, celebrating the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna, was issued by the Austrian Mint to honor the bicentenary of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. Founded in 1812, the society has played a pivotal role in Vienna's cultural life, supporting the city's concert halls and preserving musical heritage. The coin serves as a numismatic tribute to this institution's enduring influence on European classical music.
Designed by Herbert Wähner, the coin features a refined aesthetic that balances traditional Viennese motifs with modern engraving techniques. The obverse depicts the Musikverein building, the society’s iconic home, while the reverse incorporates musical symbols and celebratory elements. Released as part of Austria's long-running 5 Euro commemorative series, the design was well-received by collectors for its elegant composition and its respectful nod to Austria's historical contribution to the global arts.
