Where it came from
This 5-pound silver coin was minted in 2024 by Jersey to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Issued as part of the official numismatic program under the reign of King Charles III, the coin serves as a tribute to the Allied forces who participated in Operation Overlord during the Second World War. It reflects the island's historical significance during the conflict, particularly given the German occupation of the Channel Islands from 1940 to 1945.
The design highlights themes of remembrance and military legacy, consistent with the aesthetic standards of modern British Crown Dependency coinage. The obverse features the official effigy of King Charles III by sculptor Martin Jennings, while the reverse incorporates imagery intended to evoke the bravery of the landing forces. Such issues are generally produced for collectors and commemorative purposes, continuing a tradition of using legal tender coinage to honor milestone anniversaries of historic global events.
