Where it came from
The 1943 50 Centimes coin from French Cameroon was minted during the height of the Second World War as part of an emergency issue for the Free French Forces. Following the Allied control of the territory, there was a pressing need for circulating coinage that broke ties with the Vichy-aligned colonial administration, leading the Free French to authorize new currency designs that emphasized resistance and sovereign identity.
The design of this series, often featuring the Cross of Lorraine, was intended to serve as a symbolic assertion of Free French legitimacy under General Charles de Gaulle. These coins were produced in aluminum-bronze or similar base metals, reflecting the wartime shortages of precious materials. While functional in their role as colonial currency, they are now regarded by numismatists as important historical artifacts that mark the transition of French Equatorial Africa into the Free French movement.
