1 Franc (with "LIBRE")

The 1943 1 Franc coin for French Cameroon was minted in the context of the Second World War as part of the Free France coinage series. Produced at the request of the Free French forces under Charles de Gaulle, these coins were struck in London and later in Philadelphia to provide currency for the territories that had pledged allegiance to the resistance. The inclusion of the word 'LIBRE' served as a potent political statement, signifying the liberation of the French colonial territories from the Vichy regime and their ongoing role in the Allied effort.

The design is characterized by its stark, utilitarian aesthetic, reflecting the exigencies of wartime production and the need for portable, recognizable currency. It features the Cross of Lorraine, the emblem of Free France, which distinguishes these pieces from the standard colonial currency of the era. The coinage was well-received by the local populations and Allied forces alike, serving as a tangible symbol of resistance and legitimacy for the Free French government-in-exile during a time of immense geopolitical instability.
