Where it came from
The 1943 50 centimes coin was minted for French Cameroon during a pivotal period of the Second World War. Following the 1940 armistice, French Equatorial Africa and Cameroon rallied to the Free French Forces under Charles de Gaulle. To signify their break from the Vichy regime, the Free French government issued these coins as a symbol of sovereignty and resistance, famously adding the word 'LIBRE' to the design.
The coin was struck at the Paris Mint, utilizing a design that maintained the traditional aesthetic of the period while incorporating the political statement of independence. Despite the logistical challenges of wartime production, these coins served as a crucial medium of exchange for the Free French territories. Their inclusion of 'LIBRE' transformed them from mere currency into potent political artifacts that documented the struggle to reclaim French territory.
