Where it came from
The 2014 Houston-Perth Sister Cities 50-cent coin was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Perth, Western Australia, and Houston, Texas. Established in 1984, this partnership has long fostered ties between the two cities, both of which are major hubs for the global energy and resources industries. The coin serves as a numismatic celebration of the diplomatic and economic links shared between the two regions.
Designed by the Royal Australian Mint’s internal creative team, the reverse side features a stylized representation of the iconic silhouettes and shared industrial landscapes of both cities, blending elements of the Australian outback and the Texan urban horizon. The obverse depicts Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which has been the standard effigy on Australian coinage since 1999. It was received as a niche commemorative issue, primarily sought after by collectors of Australian decimal currency and those interested in municipal history.
