Where it came from
Released by the Royal Australian Mint in 2016, this one-dollar coin serves as a commemorative issue celebrating the Year of the Monkey within the Lunar Series. The design was produced to appeal to both numismatists and those interested in the cultural significance of the Chinese zodiac, reflecting Australia's multicultural heritage and its strong diplomatic and economic ties to the Asia-Pacific region.
The reverse of the coin features an intricate depiction of the Monkey King, a central figure in the Chinese literary classic Journey to the West, emphasizing themes of playfulness and intelligence associated with the zodiac sign. The obverse displays the standard effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, consistent with Australian legal tender requirements for the period. The series was well-received for its artistic detail and remains a standard inclusion in contemporary lunar-themed coin collections.
