Where it came from
The 2024 Steamboat Willie 50-cent coin was issued by Fiji as a commemorative tribute to the 1928 animated short film that introduced Mickey Mouse to the world. Produced as the character entered the public domain in the United States, this coin serves as a nostalgic celebration of early animation history and the evolution of cinematic copyright. It reflects the widespread cultural interest in the landmark aesthetic of early 20th-century cartoons.
The design features the iconic imagery of Mickey at the helm of the steamboat, rendered with a focus on historical authenticity to capture the charm of the original black-and-white release. Struck by specialized mints authorized by the Fijian government, the coin is aimed at both numismatic enthusiasts and Disney collectors who value pieces that mark significant shifts in both media history and the legal landscape of intellectual property.
