Where it came from
Released by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2021, this fifty-dollar coin commemorates the 400th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain's death. The design honors his role as an explorer and cartographer, specifically referencing his use of the astrolabe to navigate the St. Lawrence River. The series serves as a tribute to the early European exploration of North America and the enduring legacy of Champlain's topographical mapping efforts.
The coin features an intricate design by artist Maurice Gervais, who sought to blend historical cartography with modern minting precision. By integrating elements of an astrolabe and nautical charts, the design aims to evoke the spirit of 17th-century maritime navigation. It was produced as a collector-grade numismatic piece, intended for those interested in Canadian history and the technical artistry of high-relief coinage.
