500 Afghanis (1998 World Cup)

This 500 Afghani coin was issued by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in 1997 to commemorate the 1998 FIFA World Cup. At the time, the country was under the control of the Taliban, a period marked by significant isolation from the international community and a fragile domestic economy. The issuance of such a commemorative piece was an unusual departure from the regime's strict austerity, reflecting an attempt to maintain a semblance of conventional statehood through numismatics.

The coin features a design typical of commemorative issues from this era, utilizing basic heraldic or thematic motifs rather than the intricate numismatic art found in more stable regions. As the country was under international sanctions and political upheaval, these coins saw limited circulation and were primarily produced as novelty items for international collectors or as an effort to generate hard currency through foreign markets. Consequently, they are frequently found in near-mint condition, as they played little role in the hyper-inflated domestic cash economy of the late 1990s.
