500 Afghanis (XV World Cup USA 1994)

The 500 Afghanis coin commemorating the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States was issued in 1992 by the Da Afghanistan Bank. During this period, the nation was navigating the aftermath of the Soviet-Afghan War and the subsequent collapse of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan, a volatile climate that saw various commemorative issues produced as a means of generating international interest and numismatic revenue. The coin series reflects a brief interval of engagement with global sporting culture despite the significant domestic instability characterizing the era.

The design features the distinct iconography of the FIFA World Cup, utilizing the global platform of the tournament to depict athletic themes alongside traditional Afghan state symbols. Like many commemorative coins minted in this region during the early 1990s, the piece was produced primarily for the international collector market rather than for circulation within the local economy. Its aesthetic reflects a standardized approach to commemorative minting, intended to align the Afghan currency with globally recognized events while documenting the country's brief participation in the international numismatic exchange.
