Where it came from
This 500 Afghanis coin was issued by the Da Afghanistan Bank in 1991 to commemorate the upcoming XV World Cup, which was held in the United States in 1994. The coin reflects a period of international numismatic trends where nations frequently released commemorative currency featuring global sporting events to boost collector interest and international recognition during a time of significant political instability within Afghanistan.
The design features standard national iconography paired with soccer-themed imagery, a motif chosen to align with the global cultural significance of the FIFA World Cup. While the Afghan state was grappling with the aftermath of the Soviet-Afghan War and the onset of civil conflict, the production of such coins remained a part of the official minting operations intended to circulate commemorative legal tender, though their practical usage as currency was limited by the economic volatility of the era.
