500 Afghanis (XXVII Summer Olympic Games in Sydney)

The 500 Afghanis coin was issued by the Da Afghanistan Bank in 1998 to commemorate the participation of Afghanistan in the XXVII Summer Olympic Games, held in Sydney in the year 2000. Despite the games taking place in 2000, the coin bears the 1998 date, reflecting the planning phase during a period of significant political instability and economic turmoil within the country. It serves as a rare numismatic marker of a nation attempting to maintain a connection to the international sporting community during a tumultuous era.

The design of the coin features traditional Afghan motifs alongside Olympic imagery, intended to showcase national pride on a global stage. Given the geopolitical climate of Afghanistan in the late 1990s, the production of such commemorative currency was limited, and the coins were primarily intended for international collectors and commemorative purposes rather than domestic circulation. The piece is often regarded by historians and collectors as an enigmatic artifact of late 20th-century Afghan history, reflecting a moment of diplomatic visibility despite domestic isolation.
