Where it came from
The 500 Afghanis coin commemorating the 1988 European Football Championship was minted by the Da Afghanistan Bank to mark the international sporting event held in West Germany. During this period, the issuance of commemorative coinage by the Afghan central bank often served to demonstrate the nation's participation in global cultural and athletic discourse, despite the significant domestic political instability following the Soviet-Afghan War.
The coin features a design typical of late 20th-century commemorative numismatics, focusing on the iconography of the sport to appeal to collectors and numismatic enthusiasts. The production quality reflects the standard minting techniques employed for Afghan precious metal issues of the late 1980s, prioritizing clear heraldic and thematic imagery to serve as a tangible memento of the tournament, which remains a notable entry for collectors focusing on sports-themed world coinage.
