Where it came from
The 500 Dram coin was minted in 1995 as part of the initial wave of commemorative issues following Armenia's independence from the Soviet Union. These coins served as a bridge between the country's ancient historical legacy and its newly reclaimed sovereign status, often highlighting the cultural ties to the Kingdom of Cilicia, a medieval Armenian state that flourished in the Levant between the 11th and 14th centuries.
The design draws upon the rich iconography of the Armenian Middle Ages, incorporating motifs that celebrate the artistic and political autonomy of the Cilician period. Numismatic experts generally view these pieces as diplomatic and commemorative objects rather than circulating currency, intended primarily for collectors to preserve Armenian history on a global stage.
