Where it came from
The 500 Dram coin was minted in 1995 as part of the initial currency reform following Armenia's independence from the Soviet Union. As the country transitioned to the Dram, the Central Bank of Armenia issued this commemorative-style circulating coin to celebrate the nation's historical roots and cultural identity. The design pays homage to the Arshakonni, or Arsacid, dynasty, which held power in Armenia from the 1st to the 5th century AD.
The obverse of the coin features motifs inspired by ancient Armenian numismatics, specifically referencing the regal iconography associated with the Arsacid kings. The design process focused on bridging the gap between a modern sovereign state and the long, complex history of the Armenian Highlands. It was well-received by collectors and numismatists for its historical thematic depth, serving as a symbolic affirmation of statehood through the reclamation of ancestral artistic motifs.
