Where it came from
The 500 Dram coin was issued in 1995 as part of a commemorative series celebrating the history of the Artashesyan Dynasty, which ruled the Kingdom of Armenia from the 2nd century BC to the 1st century AD. This era is considered a golden age of Armenian statehood, and the coin serves as a numismatic tribute to the expansion and cultural development fostered by monarchs such as Artashes I and Tigranes the Great.
The design features intricate iconography reflective of the period’s historical legacy, aimed at reinforcing Armenian national identity following the country's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The aesthetic choices were intended to bridge the gap between ancient historical narrative and the modern monetary system of the Third Republic, and the series was generally well-received by collectors interested in Central Asian and Caucasian numismatics as a symbol of historical continuity.
