Provenance

Where it came from

The Isabella Quarter was minted in 1893 to coincide with the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It holds the unique distinction of being the first United States commemorative coin to feature a woman, Queen Isabella of Spain, who was instrumental in financing Christopher Columbus's voyage. The coin was specifically authorized by Congress to support the Board of Lady Managers of the Exposition, providing them with necessary funding to oversee women's contributions at the fair.

The coin was designed by sculptor Charles E. Barber, who based the obverse portrait of Queen Isabella on a painting by Titian. While Barber was a prominent figure at the United States Mint, the design met with mixed reactions from contemporary critics and the public. Some praised the historical tribute to the Queen, while others felt the design lacked the artistic flair seen in other commemorative efforts of the era. Despite these debates, the quarter remains a significant piece of American numismatic history due to its role in the early women's rights movement within the context of the World's Fair.
