½ Ecu - François d'Alençon, Brabant Revolt

The 1582 half-ecu was struck during the height of the Dutch Revolt, specifically during the period when Francis, Duke of Anjou and Alençon, was invited by the States General to become the sovereign of the Netherlands. The coin was minted in the Duchy of Brabant as an attempt to establish legitimacy and fiscal authority for the Duke, who sought to lead the rebelling provinces against the Spanish forces of Philip II.

The design reflects the political instability of the era, featuring the Duke's heraldry and titles intended to assert his status as a legitimate monarch.
