Provenance

Where it came from

The 1932 Washington Quarter was minted to commemorate the bicentennial of George Washington's birth. Originally, Congress intended to strike a commemorative half dollar for the anniversary, but the legislation was eventually redirected toward a new circulating quarter-dollar piece to replace the long-running Standing Liberty design. The coin was minted primarily in Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, marking the first time the first president appeared on a circulating United States coin.

The design was executed by sculptor John Flanagan, who won a competition commissioned by the Washington Bicentennial Committee. His profile of Washington was modeled after a famous bust created by French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon. While the design was generally well-received for its clean, classical aesthetic, it initially faced criticism from some who felt the profile lacked the artistic complexity of earlier numismatic designs. Despite these critiques, the motif proved remarkably enduring and remains in use, with various modifications, to this day.
