Where it came from
The Roosevelt silver dime was introduced in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had passed away the previous year. The design was commissioned by the United States Mint to replace the long-running Mercury dime, serving as a tribute to the late president's role in the founding of the March of Dimes organization, which fought to eradicate polio.
The coin was designed by Chief Engraver John R. Sinnock. His design features a profile portrait of Roosevelt on the obverse and a torch, olive branch, and oak branch on the reverse, representing liberty, peace, and strength. While the portrait was initially met with some minor debate regarding the aesthetic transition from the Mercury design, it was ultimately well-received and remains one of the longest-running active coin designs in American history.
