A Journey Beyond Heaven #12

A Journey Beyond Heaven, known in Japan as Tengoku Daimakyou, is a manga series written and illustrated by Masakazu Ishiguro, which began serialization in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine in 2018. Issue 12 is a specific installment within this post-apocalyptic narrative, which follows two distinct groups—one living in a secluded, walled facility and another navigating the ruins of a devastated Japan filled with supernatural creatures. The series is celebrated for its intricate world-building and the gradual, careful unraveling of its central mystery.

Ishiguro, previously acclaimed for his work on Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru, adopted a starker, more cinematic visual style for this project to emphasize the bleak atmosphere of the abandoned world. By the time the twelfth installment was published, the series had garnered significant critical praise for its tonal shifts and complex character dynamics. It remains a hallmark of modern seinen manga, noted for its ability to balance contemplative drama with moments of sudden, visceral tension, earning it a dedicated following among readers of speculative fiction.
