Where it came from
Ajin: Demi-Human, written and illustrated by Gamon Sakurai, began serialization in Kodansha's Good! Afternoon magazine in 2012. The series explores the philosophical and ethical implications of immortality through the story of Kei Nagai, a student who discovers he is a demi-human after surviving a fatal accident. The narrative is noted for its gritty, high-stakes approach to supernatural conflict and its detailed depiction of the tactical use of 'Invisibles' or IBMs.
The 'Complete' editions of the manga were released to provide a comprehensive reading experience for fans of the dark fantasy genre. Sakurai's design work is distinguished by precise, stark line art that emphasizes the clinical and sometimes unsettling nature of the demi-humans' existence. Upon release, the series gained international recognition for its complex morality and cinematic pacing, solidifying its place as a significant title in contemporary seinen manga.
