Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters #1

Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters #1 was published in 1986 by Eclipse Comics during the height of the black-and-white independent comic book boom. Created by Don Chin and illustrated by Dave Garcia, the title was designed as a satirical response to the massive cultural success of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which had launched just two years prior. The concept leveraged the absurdity of its premise to capitalize on the trend of anthropomorphic animal squads that dominated the indie market during the mid-eighties.

The book features a team of hamsters who undergo radiation-induced mutations and master martial arts after crashing on Earth. While often viewed as a novelty or a spoof, the series attained a cult following among collectors interested in the unique landscape of eighties small-press publishing. The design aesthetic reflects the gritty, low-budget spontaneity of the era, and while critics often dismissed it as a derivative imitation, the title remains a notable example of how creators engaged with and parodied the prevailing trends of the independent comic industry.
