Agent X #8

Agent X #8, released in 2002, is part of a Marvel Comics series written by Gail Simone with interior art by UDON. The series emerged as a spiritual successor to the Deadpool titles of the late 1990s, focusing on the character Alex Hayden, an amnesiac mercenary who assumes the identity of Agent X. This specific issue captures the humorous, meta-fictional tone that defined Simone’s tenure on the book, blending high-octane mercenary action with an absurdist, character-driven narrative style.

The visual aesthetic of the series was heavily influenced by the 'manga-lite' art movement prevalent in early 2000s American comics, a look championed by the UDON studio. Their work on the series utilized clean, kinetic lines and vibrant color palettes, aiming to distance the character from traditional gritty anti-hero tropes. While the series was critically praised for its witty dialogue and irreverent humor, it faced fluctuating sales and periodic cancellation threats, eventually cementing itself as a cult favorite among fans of unconventional Marvel superhero fiction.
