American Freak: A Tale of the Un-Men #5

American Freak: A Tale of the Un-Men was a five-issue limited series published by DC Comics under their Vertigo imprint in 1994. Written by Dave Louapre and illustrated by Vince Giarrano, the series emerged during a period when Vertigo was exploring darker, more psychological themes within the superhero and supernatural genres. It tells the story of a tabloid journalist investigating the origins of the Un-Men, genetically engineered creatures created by the mad scientist Anton Arcane, blending elements of body horror with a critique of celebrity culture and media exploitation.

The fifth and final issue concludes the narrative arc, resolving the investigation into the Un-Men's history while solidifying the series' grim, noir-inspired aesthetic. Vince Giarrano's gritty, atmospheric artwork was instrumental in establishing the book's unsettling tone, which aligned with the experimental artistic direction favored by Vertigo editors at the time. While the series maintains a cult following among fans of 1990s alternative comics, it remains a smaller entry in the broader DC canon, valued primarily for its distinct thematic focus on the grotesque and the uncanny.
