American Freak: A Tale of the Un-Men #4

American Freak: A Tale of the Un-Men was a five-issue limited series published by DC Comics under the Vertigo imprint in 1994. The series was written by Dave Louapre and illustrated by Vince Giarrano, emerging during a period when Vertigo was cementing its reputation for darker, surreal, and character-driven horror narratives that operated outside the mainstream superhero continuity.

The narrative follows a journalist who investigates a traveling freak show, uncovering deep-seated conspiracies and psychological horror involving the Un-Men, who were originally characters from DC's 1960s Swamp Thing mythos. Giarrano’s moody, ink-heavy artistic style was specifically chosen to evoke a sense of gritty, noir-inspired dread, which resonated with readers who appreciated the mature, unconventional tone that defined the mid-90s Vertigo catalog.
