Animal Man #24

Animal Man issue 24, released in 1990, serves as a pivotal installment in Grant Morrison's seminal run on the series. Emerging from the post-Watchmen climate of the late 1980s, the title sought to deconstruct the superhero archetype by blending meta-fictional elements with social commentary. Morrison utilized Buddy Baker not just as a costumed hero, but as a vehicle to explore existential questions about narrative agency and the relationship between characters and their creators.

The issue features artwork by Chas Truog and Doug Hazlewood, whose grounded, unadorned style provided a stark contrast to the surreal, metaphysical developments of the script. This period of the series is widely regarded for its innovative storytelling, specifically the way it broke the 'fourth wall' to challenge the reader's role in the medium. It remains a hallmark of the Vertigo-adjacent experimental style that defined DC Comics' more sophisticated output during that era.
