Aquaman #31

Published in early 1967, Aquaman #31 arrived during a transitional period for DC Comics as the Silver Age of comics began to lean toward more experimental storytelling. This issue is part of the long-running series that sought to flesh out the internal politics and mythology of Atlantis, moving away from simple episodic adventures toward a more cohesive, character-driven epic under the guidance of writer Nick Cardy and artist Nick Cardy, whose distinct, illustrative style defined the visual identity of the title during this era.

The narrative within this issue continues the focus on Arthur Curry's dual heritage and the mounting pressures of his responsibilities as King of Atlantis. The design and presentation reflect the era's commitment to high-stakes superhero fantasy, utilizing bold, vibrant covers that were intended to capture the attention of readers on crowded newsstands. While it remains a staple for collectors of the Silver Age, its legacy is tied to the broader effort by DC to modernize its secondary icons into more complex figures capable of sustaining long-form serialized drama.
