Aquaman #31

Aquaman issue 31 was published by DC Comics in early 1967, arriving during a pivotal era for the character in the Silver Age of comics. Under the guidance of writer Nick Cardy, who provided both the scripts and his iconic cover art, this issue leaned into the adventurous, sometimes surreal tone that defined the title during the mid-sixties. At this time, Aquaman was transitioning from a purely nautical hero to a monarch struggling with the political and environmental complexities of his underwater kingdom, Atlantis.

The visual identity of this issue is synonymous with the work of Nick Cardy, whose kinetic and anatomically dynamic style became the aesthetic benchmark for the series. Cardy’s ability to render the high-pressure aquatic environment while maintaining the clarity required for classic superhero narratives was widely praised by readers of the era. The issue is remembered by collectors today as a quintessential example of Cardy's tenure, capturing a specific moment when DC was pushing the boundaries of its secondary character mythologies before the more grounded shifts of the 1970s.
