Where it came from
Archie x Army of Darkness was a 2013 crossover miniseries published by Dynamite Entertainment in collaboration with Archie Comics. The project was conceived to blend the wholesome, Americana-inspired aesthetic of Riverdale with the slapstick horror and cult film sensibilities of Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness franchise. The narrative follows Ash Williams as he travels to Riverdale to battle the Necronomicon, which has been unearthed by Archie and his friends, creating a distinct tonal juxtaposition that plays on the inherent irony of the two properties.
The fourth issue concludes the miniseries, featuring scripts by Ryan Parrott and illustrations by Glenn Fabry and Kewber Baal. The design approach focused on maintaining the iconic Archie house style while abruptly interrupting it with the visceral, gritty detail characteristic of the Army of Darkness graphic novel adaptations. Upon its release, the crossover was met with curiosity from both horror fans and comic enthusiasts, noted primarily for its willingness to embrace the absurdity of its premise rather than grounding the characters in a serious reality.
