Where it came from
Released in 2013, Archie x Army of Darkness was a four-part crossover miniseries published by Dynamite Entertainment in collaboration with Archie Comics. The series was conceived to place the wholesome, small-town protagonist Archie Andrews in a direct, supernatural conflict with Ash Williams, the protagonist of the cult horror franchise Army of Darkness. This project emerged during a period of experimentation for Archie Comics, as the publisher sought to broaden its audience by placing its iconic characters into genre-bending, mature-themed narratives.
The third issue was written by Cullen Bunn and Victor Gischler, featuring interior artwork by Baldemar Rivas and cover illustrations by various artists including Jason Flowers. The series aimed to blend the slapstick humor of Archie's world with the gory, deadpan aesthetics of the Evil Dead films. It was received by fans as a surreal piece of pulp fiction, noted primarily for the stark juxtaposition between the character's familiar suburban high school life and the eldritch horrors brought on by the Necronomicon.
