Where it came from
Released in 2013 as a crossover limited series, Archie x Army of Darkness #1 brought together the wholesome world of Riverdale and the horror-comedy aesthetic of Sam Raimi’s cult film franchise. Published by Dynamite Entertainment in collaboration with Archie Comics, the project was designed to subvert the innocent nature of the Archie characters by thrusting them into a supernatural struggle against the Deadites, utilizing the Necronomicon as the catalyst for the mayhem.
The issue was written by Victor Gischler with artwork by Matias Bergara, who aimed to blend the classic, clean-lined style of Archie’s house aesthetic with the visceral, gritty gore typical of Ash Williams’ adventures. The reception was largely driven by the novelty of the pairing, appealing to fans of both nostalgic pop culture and campy horror, and it remains a notable example of the trend in early 2010s comic publishing to mash up disparate intellectual properties for shock value and humor.
