Archie x Army of Darkness #2

Released in 2013, Archie x Army of Darkness marks an unconventional crossover between the wholesome world of Riverdale and the camp-horror aesthetics of Sam Raimi's film franchise. The series was published by Dynamite Entertainment and Archie Comics, capitalising on a growing trend of pop-culture mashups that placed iconic characters in jarringly dark or supernatural environments. This issue specifically continues the narrative arc where the Necronomicon falls into the hands of Archie Andrews, necessitating the intervention of the franchise's protagonist, Ash Williams.

The art and editorial direction focused on bridging the stylistic gap between the clean, classic lines characteristic of the Archie aesthetic and the gore-heavy, frantic visual language of the Army of Darkness property. The design team sought to subvert reader expectations by maintaining Archie's signature cheerfulness while depicting increasingly grotesque scenarios. Upon release, the series was noted primarily as a curiosity within the broader comics industry, appealing to fans of meta-humor and niche crossover collectors who enjoy the incongruity of established intellectual properties merging.
