Ashita Kubi ni Narisō #1

Ashita Kubi ni Narisō, which translates to I Might Get Fired Tomorrow, is a manga series created by the artist Yoshida Sensha. Debuting in the late 1980s during a period of significant cultural shift in Japan, the work emerged as a prominent example of the heta-uma style—a deliberate aesthetic of 'bad yet good' art. This style rejected the polished technical standards of mainstream manga, favoring instead a crude, minimalist, and often unsettling visual language that served as a canvas for the author's surreal and dryly cynical humor.

The series centers on the anxieties of corporate life and the mundane absurdity of the Japanese workplace, reflecting the underlying tension felt by salarymen during the country's economic bubble. Yoshida Sensha utilized the medium to dismantle traditional narrative structures, opting for non-sequiturs and bizarre character interactions that challenged reader expectations. Upon its release, the work was received as a cult classic, celebrated by critics and readers alike for its subversive tone and its bold rejection of conventional artistry in favor of a unique, avant-garde perspective.
