Where it came from
Astonishing X-Men #17 was published in 2006 as part of the acclaimed run written by Joss Whedon with art by John Cassaday. This issue serves as the second chapter of the 'Torn' story arc, which follows the X-Men as they deal with the psychological manipulations of the villain Cassandra Nova. The series was designed to provide a modern, cinematic entry point for new readers while honoring the deep continuity of the mutant franchise.
John Cassaday’s clean, grounded illustration style was instrumental in establishing the sophisticated, high-stakes tone of this iteration of the X-Men. His approach moved away from the hyper-stylized aesthetics common in 1990s comics, opting instead for a realistic, character-focused visual language. Upon its release, the run was widely praised for its tight pacing and character development, eventually becoming regarded as a definitive modern classic within Marvel’s publishing history.
