Where it came from
Released in 2007 as part of the 'Blindfold' story arc, Astonishing X-Men #22 was written by Joss Whedon with interior art by John Cassaday. This issue serves as a critical chapter in the 'Ghost Box' storyline, which followed the team as they investigated mysterious technological threats across different dimensions. The creative team aimed to maintain the cinematic, high-stakes tone established at the start of their run, focusing on themes of isolation and the escalating geopolitical pressures facing mutantkind.
John Cassaday’s visual direction for this series was noted for its grounded, realistic approach to superhero action, intended to contrast with the more stylized aesthetic common in mid-2000s Marvel comics. The issue was generally well-received by fans and critics alike, who frequently praised the tight pacing of Whedon’s dialogue and the clean, architectural precision of Cassaday’s layouts, solidifying this specific era of the title as a modern classic for the X-Men franchise.
