Where it came from
Released in 2007 as part of the acclaimed Astonishing X-Men run, this issue serves as a pivotal installment in the 'Ghost Box' story arc. Written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Simone Bianchi, the series sought to bring a grounded, high-stakes science fiction sensibility to the X-Men mythos. Marvel editorial intended for this title to provide a sophisticated alternative to the broader X-Men crossovers of the mid-2000s, focusing on tight, character-driven narratives.
Simone Bianchi’s artistic contribution is particularly notable for its heavy, atmospheric ink work and detailed figure anatomy, which departed from the house style of the era. His vision for the team was intended to convey a sense of gravitas and cinematic scope. The issue was well-received by critics and readers alike, who praised the collaboration between Ellis's cold, analytical writing style and Bianchi’s moody, intricate visual presentation.
