Where it came from
Released in 2008 as the penultimate chapter of the 'Ghost Box' story arc, Astonishing X-Men #24 was written by Warren Ellis with artwork by Simone Bianchi. This era of the series followed the departure of Joss Whedon and John Cassaday, tasked with maintaining the momentum of the title while shifting toward a more science-fiction-oriented tone under Ellis's direction.
The issue is noted for its gritty, cinematic aesthetic, a hallmark of Bianchi’s intricate pencil work. It explores the darker, geopolitical implications of mutant technology and isolationism, reflecting the broader themes of uncertainty that permeated the Marvel Universe during this period of transition. The work was generally received as a successful pivot that leaned into the unique, high-concept plotting that defined Ellis's tenure on the X-Men franchise.
