Babaui Yong-gi #1

Babaui Yong-gi, or Courage of the Father, emerged during the late 20th-century wave of Korean manhwa aimed at highlighting familial bonds and social resilience. Published as a limited series, the first issue was created to serve as a poignant reflection on the sacrifices of the post-war generation. It was designed to bridge the gap between traditional storytelling and the modern comic aesthetic that was beginning to define the domestic industry at the time.

The illustrations for this debut issue utilized a stark, emotive style intended to ground the narrative in realism rather than fantasy. The creator sought to capture the grit of daily life, drawing heavily from personal observations of urban industrialization. Upon its release, it was noted by critics for its somber tone and its departure from the more common lighthearted genre tropes, marking it as a significant, albeit niche, work in the history of independent manhwa.
