Babs: The Black Road South #5

Babs: The Black Road South is a self-published independent comic series that emerged from the underground comix resurgence of the early 2010s. The series focuses on the character Babs, a cynical and resourceful drifter navigating a stylized, post-societal landscape. Issue number five serves as a pivotal chapter in the narrative arc, deepening the protagonist's internal conflict and introducing key thematic motifs regarding isolation and survival.

The visual identity of the series is defined by stark, high-contrast ink work that emphasizes shadow and minimalist backgrounds. The creative team aimed to subvert traditional adventure tropes by focusing on character psychology rather than typical heroics, a stylistic choice that was praised by independent critics for its raw emotional honesty and unique aesthetic. While the series maintains a niche status, it is regarded by collectors of small-press comics as a quintessential example of contemporary independent storytelling.
