Where it came from
Babs: The Black Road South #1 was published as the inaugural installment of a self-contained limited series centered on the titular character, Babs. The narrative emerged during a period of experimentation within independent comic publishing, aiming to blend gritty road-trip tropes with a distinct, character-driven focus that emphasized atmospheric storytelling over traditional superhero archetypes.
The creative direction for the series prioritized a stark, minimalist visual language intended to mirror the protagonist's internal isolation. The illustration style was received by enthusiasts of the indie scene as a refreshing departure from mainstream house styles, praised specifically for its focus on shadow and environmental detail which helped establish the bleak, evocative tone of the journey south.
