Where it came from
Batman Annual #20 was published in 1996 as part of the DC Comics 'Legends of the Dead Earth' event. This thematic crossover challenged creative teams to imagine the future legacy of DC icons centuries after their original eras had concluded. The issue serves as a standalone exploration of how the mythology of the Batman might be interpreted, distorted, or preserved by humanity in a distant, post-apocalyptic future.
The issue features a story titled 'The Batman of the Future' written by Barry Dutter and illustrated by Sergio Cariello. The design and narrative approach sought to lean into the archetypal nature of the character, emphasizing the suit and the symbol as a lingering ghost in the machinery of civilization. Critical reception at the time reflected the broader audience response to the Legends of the Dead Earth initiative, which was appreciated by readers who enjoyed speculative, high-concept shifts away from standard continuity.
