Batman: Bad Seeds - Gotham Central #1

Gotham Central #1 was published in February 2003, marking the debut of a groundbreaking procedural series created by writers Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka, with interior art by Michael Lark. Moving away from the typical caped crusader-centric narratives, the series was conceived to explore the daily lives and professional struggles of the Gotham City Police Department. It grounded the fantastic elements of the Batman mythos in a gritty, realistic urban environment where officers dealt with the consequences of super-villain activities from the perspective of those without superpowers.

The creative team aimed for a noir-inspired aesthetic, blending police procedural tropes with the high-stakes atmosphere of the DC Universe. Michael Lark’s evocative, shadow-heavy style was instrumental in defining this tone, receiving critical acclaim for its departure from traditional superhero art. The series was widely praised by critics and readers alike for its mature storytelling and deep characterization, securing its place as a seminal work in the Batman franchise and a landmark title for the early 2000s comic book industry.
