Batman Annual #25

Batman Annual #25 was published by DC Comics in 2006 as part of the broader Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight narrative tapestry. This specific issue, titled The Mud Pack, was crafted by writer Simon Spurrier and artist Javier Saltares. It serves as a reimagining and expansion of the history of the classic villain Clayface, specifically exploring the legacy of Basil Karlo and his interaction with subsequent iterations of the character, such as Matt Hagen and Preston Payne.

The creative team aimed to provide a definitive, dark exploration of the clay-based identity, weaving a tale that blended body horror with the psychological weight of the Batman mythos. The narrative was received as a competent exercise in deep-dive character study, lauded for its gritty tone and the atmospheric art style that captured the fluid, shifting nature of its antagonists. It stands within the tradition of the Batman Annual format, which frequently offered creators a larger canvas to explore long-standing rogue gallery members outside the constraints of the primary monthly series.
