Where it came from
Batman Beyond #21 was published in 2018 as part of the DC Rebirth era, a period in which DC Comics sought to revitalize its legacy titles by blending classic continuity with modern narrative sensibilities. This specific issue is part of the 'The Long Payback' story arc, which explores the complex history of the vigilante known as Payback. The narrative was crafted by writer Dan Jurgens, a long-time architect of the Batman mythos who aimed to deepen the connection between Terry McGinnis’s future Gotham and the established tropes of the wider DC Universe.
The interior art for this issue features the work of artist Marco Santucci, whose style adheres to the sleek, dynamic aesthetic expected of a futuristic Batman title. The cover art, provided by Bernard Chang, emphasizes the high-tech, neon-drenched atmosphere that defines the Neo-Gotham setting. Upon its release, the issue was received as a solid entry in the series, appreciated by fans for its focus on character development and its ability to maintain the high-stakes tension of the Batman Beyond franchise within the broader constraints of DC's monthly publication schedule.
