Where it came from
Batman Beyond #22 was published by DC Comics in 2018 as part of the ongoing series following Terry McGinnis, the successor to Bruce Wayne in a futuristic Gotham City. This issue serves as a chapter in the 'The Long Payback' story arc, written by Dan Jurgens with interior art by Marco Castiello. The narrative explores the complex legacy of the mantle and the personal toll taken on those who inhabit the suit, a central theme that has defined the series since its transition from animated media to comic books.
The design and visual language of this issue draw heavily from the sleek, minimalist aesthetic established by the 1999 television show, updated for the modern comic format. Dan Jurgens, a veteran of the DC Universe, utilized the futuristic setting to juxtapose technological advancement with the timeless grit of classic noir storytelling. Upon its release, the issue was noted for its focus on character development and the psychological weight of the Batman persona, appealing to long-time fans of the futuristic timeline who value the character's internal conflict over simple action sequences.
