Before the Fantastic Four: Reed Richards #1

Before the Fantastic Four: Reed Richards #1 was published by Marvel Comics in 2000 as part of a limited series designed to explore the formative years of the team's leader. Set during Reed Richards' college days at the fictional State University, the story aimed to flesh out the character's early motivations and intellectual development before the fateful space flight that created the Fantastic Four. The series sought to modernize the origin by placing Reed in a contemporary academic environment while maintaining his established scientific roots.

The issue was written by Tom Brevoort and John Higgins, with interior art by Higgins. The creative team leaned into a narrative style that prioritized character-driven drama and academic tension over the high-stakes superhero action typically associated with the main Fantastic Four title. Upon release, it was regarded as a niche expansion of the Marvel mythos, appealing primarily to long-time readers interested in the internal history of the Richards character rather than general audiences looking for traditional superhero tropes.
