Where it came from
Before the Fantastic Four: Reed Richards #3 was published by Marvel Comics in 2000 as part of a three-issue limited series exploring the early years and academic background of the team's leader. This title emerged during a period in which Marvel revisited the formative histories of its flagship characters, aiming to provide a deeper psychological profile of Reed Richards before his transformation into Mr. Fantastic. The narrative centers on his scientific ambitions and the challenges he faced within the collegiate environment of his youth.
The issue was written by Peter David and illustrated by Duncan Rouleau, whose collaboration sought to balance a grounded, period-specific aesthetic with the high-concept science fiction elements synonymous with the Fantastic Four. The creative team aimed to portray Richards as a brilliant but socially isolated prodigy, a characterization that resonated with readers who appreciated a more intimate, character-driven approach to superhero storytelling. The series is generally regarded by fans of the franchise as a thoughtful expansion of the character's pre-spaceflight origins.
