Where it came from
Published in 2000 as part of the Marvel Comics limited series 'Before the Fantastic Four: Reed Richards,' this issue explores the formative years of Marvel's premiere scientist. The project was conceived as a prequel narrative to provide depth to the origin of the Fantastic Four, detailing Reed's academic life and early scientific ambitions before the fateful space flight that granted the team their powers.
Written by Casey Jones with art by Joe Bennett, the series was designed to lean into a period-piece aesthetic that captures the intellectual intensity of a young Reed Richards. While the series was aimed at longtime fans seeking expanded character lore, the reception was largely focused on its role in building out the broader 1960s-inspired foundation of the Marvel mythos rather than revolutionizing the team's established origin.
